Post UHJ makes 3 decisions affect the Bahai calendar

The Universal House of Justice has released a letter detailing three decisions that will allow for the uniform implementation of the Bahai calendar (aka the Badi` calendar) with effect from March 21, 2015.

The first decision is that Tehran "will be the spot on the earth that will serve as the standard for determining, ... the moment of the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and thereby the day of Naw-Ruz for the Baha'i world." The equinox occurs when the planet, in its orbit around the sun, reaches the point at which its poles incline neither towards nor away from the sun, with the result that the northern and southern hemispheres are equally illuminated. At that precise moment, the time of day or night differs around the globe (as at any astronomical moment). It may be noon in one country, and past nightfall in another country. In the Kitab-e Aqdas, Baha'u'llah states that "The Festival of Naw-Ruz falleth on the day that the sun entereth the sign of Aries [that is, at the moment of the equinox], even should this occur no more than one minute before sunset." The ruling of the House of Justice means that if the astronomical moment of equinox occurs before sunset in Tehran, on March 20, Bahais around the world will celebrate Naw Ruz on March 20. If the equinox occurs when the sun has already set in Tehran, they will celebrate Naw Ruz on March 21, and so on.

The second decision is that the birthdays of the Bab and Baha'u'llah will be celebrated on the "first and the second day following the occurrence of the eighth new moon after Naw-Ruz." The Bab was born on 1 Muharram in 1819, and Baha'u'llah on 2 Muharram 1817, with the result that in countries that use the Islamic lunar calendar, the two Bahai holidays followed one another. In the past, Bahais in other countries have celebrated these holy days on October 20 and November 12. Henceforth, the "twin holy days" will be celebrated on two successive days, as a 'movable feast,' falling anywhere from mid-October to mid-November according to the Gregorian calendar. Next year, the two Holy Days will fall on November 13 and 14 (10 Qudrat and 11 Qudrat).

The third decision is to fix the dates for all remaining holy days in accordance with the Badi` calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar. This follows from the first decision described above, but it also means that various historical questions, such as whether the Bab was in fact executed on July 8 or July 9, have been set aside. Whatever the findings of historians on such points may be, they will not affect the day on which the holy day is celebrated.

The full text of the letter from the Universal House of Justice is available in the documents archive of my Bahai Studies blog.

Sen, good morning

I cannot tell you with what excitement I read, first your post when it arrived in my inbox, and then the text of the letter itself. The last paragraph of the leter speaks far more than the words themselves state:

Quote:
The adoption of a new calendar in each dispensation is a symbol of the power of Divine Revelation to reshape human perception of material, social, and spiritual reality. Through it, sacred moments are distinguished, humanity's place in time and space reimagined, and the rhythm of life recast. Next Naw-Ruz will mark yet another historic step in the manifestation of the unity of the people of Baha and the unfoldment of Baha'u'llah's World Order.
Also, a brief note. I cannot find this thread in the front-page indices, nor where the URL from my email says this lives, under bahaiforums.com/news/, but did find it under general discussion/news. Don't know how many will find it like this.

With my warmest greetings

Romane

Romane,

Isn't it thrilling? How long I have yearned for the twin days to be celebrated in conjunction. This is so wonderful! I am beside myself with joy at this announcement.

Another implication, is that it is possible that the month of 'Ala (Loftiness) may sometimes be shorter than 19 days, which also means the fasting period would be reduced.

I hope we will adopt a similar practice about other holy days as well. For example, it would be wonderful if the Baha'i world commemorated the martyrdom of the Bab at the moment of July 9th noon as it occurs in Tabriz. This way the entire Baha'i world would be united in its observance and the observance would coincide with the anniversary of the actual moment of its occurrence. Similarly, the other anniversaries could be commemorated with dates and times synchronously with the places proper in which they occurred. I really hope this happens too, someday.

Cheers

This is heartening and inspiring news! I have linked it from another post that does appear on the main page, so hopefully it will get the attention and discussion it deserves.

Metric System of Time

The Badi Calender is the Metric System of Time.

No more "Moon" Days, "Sun" Days, "Saturn" Days, etc.

The "twelve months", which end in 7, 8, 9, 10 (Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec) will no longer confuse people, and the months honoring Roman Caesars such as Julius and Augustus will cease to exist.

You can find the text at the official UHJ website under "activities of the Baha'i community" located in the "selected letters and statements" section or link to it directly 10 July 2014 letter.

Thank you Fadl for the direct link!

I was always enamored by the poetry of the "Twin Festivals" as described by Shoghi Effendi and feel joy that we can now look forward to their commemoration in 2015!

I can't find words for how happy this makes me, and the feeling of respect and admiration for the Supreme Body. The solution of 8th new moon after Ridvan is a genius solution which is so simple and wise yet heretofore unimagined. I used to wish we would simply follow the Hijri calendar to have our twin days, of course then they would recede through the years and occur in all seasons. Now we have it linked to Naw Ruz, an astronomical event, and Tehran the birth place of the Lord of the age, and the lunar event proceding Naw Ruz coinciding with the birth anniversaries.....just wow! And we are not pegged to Hijri or Gregorian, are solar with lunar when needed....I am simply lost for words at how stupendous this all is.

Ya baha'ul-abha!

I am not sure if anyone has understood the significance of this announcement to the Baha'i world. The final link of the Baha'i Faith to Islam or its calendar has been severed. The anniversaries of the twin Birthdays were celebrated according to the Islamic calendar up until this point. From now on it will be celebrated in a different manner. This is the equivalent of the Council of Nicea changing the date of Easter for the Christian world forever severing its links to Judaism or the change of the Qiblih by the Prophet of God from Jerusalem to Mecca. This announcement is very historic in so many ways and we should all render thanks to the Almighty for it.

Well said, my friend. This is a truly monumental and historic event the full significance of which may take some time to sink in.

Cheers

Very dear friends

As Fadl said:

Quote:

A statement of independence. An act to bring the entire world into one. A hint of what lies ahead of this Cause. A direct vision to the Baha'is of where the Faith has attained to. A clarification of our identy as one people under One God. An encouragement to increase our efforts. A glimmer of the world whose foundations are being laid today.

So many implications, some of which will not be seen till our childrens days, but the influence of which will immediately affect our own lives in ways as yet unforeseen by any of us. And how could we foresee? Already we are in uncharted waters, and except for the infallible guidance of the Universal House of Justice, we would be swept on the rocks - that steadying Hand of the Ancient Beauty through His Institutions ensures that we remain safe and on course.

Excited !!

Very excited !!

Very very excited !!

With warmest of greetings

Romane

I'm a bit late in responding to this, but I must say I was beyond excited when I first heard about it. I'm still processing it.

It seems that Naw Ruz will usually fall on March 20th, which means that all the Feast days will be one day earlier, which means the Feasts and some Holy days will be one day early.

The definitive tables showing the new dates have not yet been released but there is a preliminary discussion here :
