Tests and trials

Does this mean that if we want to take difficulties in our stride then we must work on our spiritual wellbeing? How do souls become sanctified? There is a choice involved. Some people believe that some people are just chosen and it is their destiny but I am veering towards the opinion that the choice is ours (maybe a more difficult or confusing choice for some than others) but I think that there is opportunity for all to make the choices that will lead to greater spiritual development.
I have concluded that sucessful people are not necessarily those who have more potential than most but they are those who know how to use their potential. I also think that happy people are not necessarily those who seem to have more to be happy about but they just have a positive perspective on life.
