Schiller wrote the poem "Ode to Joy" and Beethoven set it to music.. What is not known is the background. Schiller came across a despondent student with out money in Leipzig and offered him support.. made him promise not to be suicidal.. Schiller then composed the Ode to Joy to celebrate life: CHORUS Joy, beautiful spark of the gods, Daughter of Elysium, We enter fire imbibed, Heavenly, thy sanctuary. Be embraced, Millions! This kiss for all the world! Brothers!, above the starry canopy A loving father must dwell. Can you sense the Creator, world? Seek him above the starry canopy. Above the stars He must dwell. Be embraced, Millions! This kiss for all the world! Brothers!, above the starry canopy A loving father must dwell. Beethoven's "Ode to Joy": Henry Van Dyke wrote a poem (in English) for the melody of the choral section in the 9th Symphony. Here are his words. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing (sometimes chanting) bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine. Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o'er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life. The banner of the Holy Spirit is uplifted, and men see it, and are assured with the knowledge that this is a new day." ~ Abdu'l-Baha, Abdu'l-Baha in London, p. 19 "...believers are found who are associating with each other in the utmost firmness and steadfastness -- day and night they have no other intention save the diffusion of the fragrances of God, they have no other hope except the promotion of the heavenly teachings, like the candles they are burning with the light of the love of God, and like thankful birds are singing songs, spirit-imparting, joy-creating, in the rose garden of the knowledge of God" ~ Abdu'l-Baha, Tablets of the Divine Plan, p. 15 |

A very smart man who chose to lead another life than be a Baha'i told me that this was written in anticipation of Baha'u'llah. It was written in the light cast by the "Age of Enlightenment" which is what the 18th Century was called. I like the movie "Immortal Beloved" which is probably all bunk, but it certainly imparts some accurate spirit about Beethoven. Hey, I'm very deaf. I relate.
