What's the Point of Learning the Lives of the Prophets?

Greetings all - I was having a meetup with my interfaith group, when a thought popped into my head. I find I am very interested in the lives of the Manifestations of God, and I always love to hear stories from their lives. But then I thought to myself, "Why? How does this bring me closer to God?"

So many people focus on the figures instead of the message. While it is lovely to hear about stories of Baha'u'llah's life, do they even have a religious benefit?

I find I connect more with the people as opposed to the message they bring. Am I focusing on the wrong thing? It's not that I don't enjoy or connect with the message, it's just that I connect to a larger extent with the people behind that message. At this point, I've probably read more from the lives of Hindu sages than I have the texts that they wrote. The figures attract me greatly.

In trying to reconcile this mental divide, I came to the conclusion that the stories are inspirational, and at least sometimes contain a lesson that can be learned.

So, is there religious value to, say, hearing stories of Baha'u'llah, or any other Manifestation?

Greetings Saveyist

The first proof of a Manifestation is their own Selves and their Lives. Then it is their Message.

They are first to live their Message, thus their lives will be the Message.

This, I think, is why you are so connected to the Person. We are told it is the Self of God.

Regards Tony

In terms of religious benefits? Little aside from maybe what not to do, lol. I guess it's good for background info.

Bahaullah answers:

Examine the wondrous behavior of the Prophets, and recall the defamations and denials uttered by the children of negation and falsehood, perchance you may cause the bird of the human heart to wing its flight away from the abodes of heedlessness and doubt unto the nest of faith and certainty, and drink deep from the pure waters of ancient wisdom, and partake of the fruit of the tree of divine knowledge. Such is the share of the pure in heart of the bread that hath descended from the realms of eternity and holiness.
Should you acquaint yourself with the indignities heaped upon the Prophets of God, and apprehend the true causes of the objections voiced by their oppressors, you will surely appreciate the significance of their position. Moreover, the more closely you observe the denials of those who have opposed the Manifestations of the divine attributes, the firmer will be your faith in the Cause of God. Accordingly, a brief mention will be made in this Tablet of divers accounts relative to the Prophets of God, that they may demonstrate the truth that throughout all ages and centuries the Manifestations of power and glory have been subjected to such heinous cruelties that no pen dare describe them. Perchance this may enable a few to cease to be perturbed by the clamor and protestations of the divines and the foolish of this age, and cause them to strengthen their confidence and certainty.
