Gendered-ness of the Soul

I thought I remembered reading in the Writings that the soul is genderless, but looking back for a citation, I have been unable to find this. Can anyone provide insight?

Indeed it is so. But, still, how about the Maid of Heaven?

Hi,

I have read somewhere as well that gender does not exist in the afterlife as well but I can't remember where that came from.

There is this quote from Abdu'l-Baha;

"In the estimation of God there is no distinction of sex….That is, men and women alike are the revealers of His names and attributes, and from the spiritual viewpoint there is no difference between them."

Gender is a condition of this world of existence. It is a necessity in the narrative of the emergence of existing things and it is mirrored in all created things.Does it exist in the afterlife? Who knows but I bet it leaves an impression on the sprit that creates some sort of differentiation.

Regards,

O

Hi there, nice to see you here... I am srragland on Planet Baha'i. I do not post here that much but I check in once in a while.

Regarding the gender, it seems odd that we would not remember someone as having been a man or a woman from this life, but who knows, the afterlife is such a mystery... and that is very disconcerting I might add. I guess I am about the oddest Baha'i around because I do not want to live forever in some strange dimension... Of course, I cannot even imagine it being like heaven since most of my life on this plane of existence has been hell... It is getting better though, I hope you are doing better these days too.

Sincerely, Trailblazer

Hi Trailblazer,

Nice to hear from you! Yes, our mental state in the next life is inconceivable with the window of perspective we have in this life. I have read somewhere that the motif of birth and death continues throughout the afterlife's worlds of existence. Im keeping a low profile these days, I don't have as much energy to communicate but the topic of gender and emergence of existence is on my mind these days. I hope all is well with you these days and look forward to being more active in the future.

Love,

Dave

@Onlyoneatall has the quote. Follow it up and read the entire explanation is my recommendation. This particular quote is from Promulgation of Universal Peace (https://www.miscellanie.com/allthete.../pup/s108.html)

It is more interesting when one considers why. Elsewhere, 'Abdul-Baha speaks of this, and @Onlyoneatall hints at it at the end of the same post.

Someonce, I recall reading an explanation of 'Abdu'l-Baha (which, for the life of me, I cannot locate at the moment - anyone?) stating explicitly that sex / gender does not exist in the next world, but only in this world, as there is no need for the functions of sex, which is reproductive. That is the world of the Spirit. Here, the function of sex has no purpose, for it is God Who creates spirits / souls / etc (even when we examine the reproductive aspects, it is only two bodies joining together to produce a third body - God supplies the rest - soul / spirit / etc.). See also the numerous quotes from authoritative sources which clearly state that in the eyes of God, it is a person's spirituality which matters, not their gender. Considering that it is the spirit which is the purpose and function of life, this makes complete sense.

This whole subject of sex and gender (the implications between the two words is vastly different) is quite fascinating - volumes could be written, and will, I am certain, be written in the future - there are many subtleties in symbolic terms still well beyond our understanding at this point in our evolution spiritually.
