I have seen alot of programs out there based around our religion already but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for something else. I have just finished a project i was working on and now looking for another. i would like to do something for the religion though. I was going to make a chat program like the old virtual places excite had but that would be a huge undertaking and would require more resources than i have at the moment. But i am open to any ideas anyone might have, calanders/time management built around the bahai calender, database tracking members of an assembly or even a linux driven version of ocean. open to ideas |

It's great that you'd like to use your programming talents to serve the Faith. I think FaceBook needs more Baha'i applications. A "Baha'i Quote of the Day" application would be great, and could bring a lot of non-Baha'is into contact with the Word of God. There are also a lot of Baha'i bloggers these days, mostly using WordPress (and some use Drupal). Baha'i plug-ins/modules for WordPress or Drupal -- 'Quote of the Day' or a 'Baha'i Calendar' for example -- would also be much appreciated. Collaborating with others would be awesome too, as some projects may be too vast to tackle individually. For example, a RefTagger type application for the Baha'i Writings would be amazing, but need a lot of work. Good luck! |

| Member | Bahá'í programs - calendar and dates
I don't know if this exists. If it does, I have missed it. I would like to see an add-on for microsoft office or open office that would automatically insert the Bahá'í date, just like you can automatically insert the usual kind of date. I would also like to see an application that displayed the Bahá'í date on the desktop. I find it so hard to connect with the Bahá'í calendar and that would be a good reminder and helpful when typing minutes of LSA Meetings. It would also be good to be able to generate a calendar that had Bahá'í and Western dates together in a number of formats eg year on a page, week on a page, month on a page. Some time ago I saw a Bahá'í diary with a western month to view. Feast days were indicated with partial shading of 2 days to acknowledge that the Bahá'í day ends/begins at sunset. I really liked that.

Someone created an add-on for the Mozilla Firefox browser that displays the Baha'i calendar, English and Persian character sets. |

Actually, recently I haven't been able to get the idea out of my head for an Iphone application which would serve as a Baha'i book reader. I imagine it having all the major works of the central figures of the faith in a readable format. In addition it would be great to be able to give a bio of each book (maybe taken from wikipedia). The ability to search for quotes, and bookmark favourites would make it a wonderful tool. Ocean on the go. After getting that far, it would be great to see it develop into a deeper study tool. If there was a bahai studies social networking website that allowed people to anotate and discuss the writings in a natural manner (another pet project I'd love to start one day) then it only seems logical to add in the potential to anotate on the iphone app, and sync your annotations with the website. It would be great to build this app for android phones too, however I only have an Iphone. In order to start building this id need to either A) buy a macbook (cant develop for Iphone on a windows/unix pc) or B) install osx on my dell (iv done it before, but its a big pain in the butt) I just love the idea of having a quality tool easily accessable in my pocket at all times to quickly and efficiantly dip into the vast ocean of the writings. What do you think? any interest in collaborating on a project like this? |
