Hi All, It's lunchtime here in the UK and I've been hungry for about two hours. So I got to thinking about food and if anyone has got any good ideas for the perfect Fast breakfast - that will nourish, hydrate and keep the hunger pangs away? There are the obvious ones, like drinking lots of water and eating dates and bananas and my dad says that cucumbers are the best food for hydration, but I'm sure there are some other good ideas out there to experiment with - anyone? For example; my normal non-Fast breakfast is a coffee and chocolate croissant (not to be confused with a pan au chocolat) that I have when I get to the office. During Fast times I was having breakfast at home, usually with a cup of tea and as much water or juice as I could manage. I stayed clear of coffee as its a diuretic and would de-hydrate me further......but I still got headaches, especially in the first few days whilst my body adjusted, so this year I had a different plan.....to embrace coffee. On the first day of the Fast I got up and had two large mugs of fresh filter coffee. Now it could have been that or the eggs, bacon and tomatoes, a carrot, a fruit yoghurt, two tea-cakes and two large glasses of pomegranate and elderflower cordial that made the difference, but there was no headache that afternoon and I felt much less drowsy than normal. I have stuck with the two cups of coffee and two large glasses of pomegranate and elderflower cordial and have been pretty good so far....just getting hungry at lunch time and finding it a bit more difficult to concentrate on certain things at work which is pretty good. So what else have people tried that’s made a difference or just made breakfast at 6am more interesting? Happy Fasting, Sam |

Well I think whatever works for you is good.. The first few days are I think the most difficult for people as you pointed out as the body adjusts.. I like your diet of pomegranete and some veggies.. For me tea is best.. The coffee is something I don't do so much.. When you're ill you might notice tea is more settling on the tummy than coffee and the body knows best.. but maybe that's just me. Also as a diuretic too much coffee might not be a good idea as your body needs to retain fluid as much as possible during the day. I generally load up on the fruit juices in the morning.. In the evening I prefer soap and some bread.. later something a little more substantial.. I tend to eat later in the evening when I fast.. |

I am told that withdrawal from caffeine can make your head ache. I usually try and drink as much as I can at breakfast time. I have my normal coffee or two as well as juice and/or water. I sometimes pour some boiling water into my cold water if it is hard to drink. I try to have at least a pint of water/juice. It is not such a pleasure but it seems necessary. I find porridge oats seems to keep me going best with a bit of fruit if I can manage it. Sometimes I put some sultanas in the porridge. and eat it with milk. I find that it doesn't seem to matter so much what I eat in the evening but I must be sure to drink lots, even if I don't feel like it. I break the fast with a drink of juice or water and then another one and possibly one more.
