I was searching for information on Revelation in regards to the Timing of the Lesser Peace (Just out of interest) and came upon this site Daniel Revelation Bible Studies : What I found interesting was this passage "Because the world did not end in 1844, we have the advantage of reviewing the Millerite movement to see what went wrong. Miller’s conclusion about 1844 created a fatal problem that no one could foresee. The Millerites ended up reasoning backwards. They let their prophetic conclusion obscure prophetic details. The Millerites (unwittingly) abused the Bible by forcing it to say things it did not say. It is very important that we observe this flaw because it is a perpetual problem for everyone who studies the Bible. The Millerite movement was built on a false assumption and the movement eventually imploded because they forced the Bible to defend their conclusions rather than allowing the Bible to speak for itself. At maximum volume, the Bible speaks so softly that one must really strain to hear what it has to say. Personal bias, tradition, heritage, and external authority easily drown out God’s Word." I thought it would be interesting to find & Post as many of these references as possible, I also think the Jehovah witnesses had 1844 as well. It is a wonder that even when this date has been foretold by quite a few people, that many will still not link it to the start of the Baha'i Faith Regards Tony |

I found these little bits - http://www.jw-archive.org/2010/12/ch...1805-1844.html William Miller had a strong religious background, but he became attached to the wrong "crowd". His friends set aside the Bible and had vague ideas about God and His personality. When Miller was thirty-four years of age he became dissatisfied with his views. The Holy Spirit impressed his heart, and he turned to the study of the Word of God. He found in Christ the answer to all his needs. His study led him to the great prophecies that pointed to the first and to the second advent of our Lord. The time prophecies interested him, particularly the prophecies of Daniel and The Revelation. In the year 1818, as a result of his study of the prophecies of Daniel 8 and 9, he came to the conclusion that Christ would come some time in the year 1843 or 1844. He hesitated until 1831 before he began to announce his findings. From his first public service we may mark the beginnings of the Advent movement in North America. In the months and years that followed, roughly 100,000 persons came to believe in the imminence of Christ's second coming. Following the great disappointment of 1844, Miller lived for several years. He fell asleep in Christ in 1849. A small chapel stands near his home in Low Hampton, New York, built by Miller before he died. In spite of his misunderstanding of the event that was to transpire in 1844, God used him to awaken the world to the nearness of the end and to prepare sinners for the time of judgment. And another site - Did not post link was trying to discredit these branches. In 1818 Miller calculated the return of Christ to be 1843. This calculation was based on the prophecy of Daniel 8:14 : "Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed," If you apply the principle of one-day equals one year, this brings you to 2300 years starting with the reconstruction of Jerusalem by the Persian Artaxerxes 1 in 457 BC. Thus 2300 minus 457 years bring us to 1843. Much later, Miller states "My principles in brief, are, that Jesus Christ will come again to this earth, cleanse, purify, and take possession of the same, with all the saints, sometime between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844”. Nothing having happened March 21st 1844, a new date was calculated: April 18th 1844. Again nothing. Consequently another new date was projected: October 22nd 1844. Again nothing happened. This latter was coined as “The Great Disappointment” Miller died in 1849 having never seen the return of Christ, but was still convinced of his imminent return. It is estimated that he had between 50 000 and 500 000 followers. A number of followers concluded that the 1844 date in fact was correct, but that it coincided with the coming of Christ in his sanctuary and the beginning of the Judgment Hour. The following are a few of the branches born from this: “The Advent Church, The Seventh-Day Adventists, The Bible Students (Russellites) and of course The Jehovah’s Witnesses. I've lived near a fairly large Adventist community and it's been interesting when the subject of william Miller and 1844 are discussed.. Adventists know very little about the Faith but when they learn the importance of 1844/1260 to us they are usually surprised. The other point is that Adventists follow the teachings of Ellen G. White who in response to the year of the great disappointment (1844) had a vision that Jesus had entered the sanctuary and deferred divine judgement and so did not return in 1844... I've had some interesting discussions with Adventists.. One time they invited me to their university and asked if we Baha'is believed in original sin .. of course I said no... Some of the sites above are from Jehovah Witnesses about Miller and that's interesting.. |
