My mother has been travel teaching in Nicaragua for several years . I joined her for the first time this year. We decided one night to go to feast: what an adventure! The town was small, dirty and poor. We walked to the town square which serves as a market during the day, streets were narrow, dark and scary. At the end of the ally we suddenly arrived at a door with bars on the windows and door. Inside I met Baha'u'llah's spiritual grandson only I didn't know it yet. After feast I was looking at some of the hosts photos and one caught my eye. He looked like Baha'u'llah in a lot of ways so I could tell it was old. Our host told me that photo was his grand father. I admired it for a bit and at one point he told me that his grand father had met Baha'u'llah. Oh to my surprise! He turned the photo over and opened it from the back. I could feel something special was about to happen. Inside were two tablets: one from Baha'u'llah and another from Abdu'l baha. Our host explained their purpose. His grand parents were servants to Baha'u'llah. I believe they were pioneers if I recall correctly. Over the course of many years had met Baha'u'llah something like 72 times. Prior to his declaration the mother had desired to rub Baha'u'llah's shoe on her stomach in an effort to recieve a blessing for a child, apparently this was a common ritual in those days. However this was denied to her so the grand father asked abdu'l baha if he could ask Baha'u'llah for a blessing instead. This was granted to them. Now mind you these people were in their 40's and had been trying to conceive since their wedding night to no avail, both assumed that for whatever reason, they could not conceive. Baha'u'llah said to the grandmother, I have 'interceded' as requested on your behalf and it's a girl! The tablets were confirmation that an intercecion took place and Baha'u'llah wrote that he was quite literally the grand parent to the hosts mother for whom the tablet was written too. I forget the exact wording save for the word intercession. Apparently that's slang for miracle! It was a very cool moment for me to meet this person. As a second generation American Bahai, I'm far removed from the founding members, the land or any of the other significant parts of this movement. Having that link to the past connected me in a way to Bahullah in a manner not easily achieved through reading. |
