The day of Vahid's martyrdom was the eighteenth of the month of Sha'ban, in the year 1266 A.H. Ten days later, the Báb was shot in Tabriz. ~ Shoghi Effendi, The Dawn-Breakers, p. 499 Vahid's martyrdom shed an imperishable lustre upon the Faith of God. The story of his life adorns the pages of the history of the Cause and the example he has left will guide and inspire countless generations throughout the ages. He was peerless in the realm of learning and knowledge, indomitable in his faith, challenging in his public discourse, heroic in the defence of the Cause of God and unsurpassed in his love for the Báb. In the Suriy-i-Sabr Bahá'u'lláh describes the proclamation of the Faith by Vahid and the circumstances which led to the upheaval in Nayriz. He recounts, at some length, the events which led to the incarceration of the believers and lauds their heroism, self-sacrifice, and eventual martyrdom. He portrays the agony and sufferings which were inflicted upon the survivors, mainly women and children, who were forced to accompany the heads of the martyrs which were carried aloft on lances to Shiraz and paraded in the streets and bazaars of that city. He severely condemns the perpetrators of such atrocities and warns them not to rejoice in their actions, but to fear the wrath of an almighty God who will justly, in the next world, punish them for the cruelties they have inflicted upon His loved ones. ~ Adib Taherzadeh, The Revelation of Baha'u'llah v 1, p. 264 |

On Saturday, June 30 at the historic Evergreen Cabin on Evergreen Place in Teaneck, the Bahá’í Community of Teaneck is holding its annual unity picnic. This year is the 100th anniversary of the visit of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the son of the Founder of the Bahá’í Faith who in1912, traveled from then Palestine to visit America after a lifetime of imprisonment and persecution for his religious beliefs. His journey in North America lasted 239 days, including ten days in Canada, during which He traveled to important cities from the east to the west coast and met with people of diverse backgrounds and interests. When asked why he had undertaken the journey to America, ‘Abdu'l-Bahá stated, "…I have come to America to raise the standard of universal peace and to bring unity among mankind…" He addressed many religious groups and organizations such as the NAACP, the Theosophists, as well as audiences at Columbia, Howard and Stanford Universities. He also met with leaders of the day, including President Theodore Roosevelt and Alexander Graham Bell. He visited the poor and downtrodden, proclaimed the equality of men and women, and he championed the cause of racial unity. On June 29, 1912, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá invited the Bahá’ís of New York and the surrounding areas to a unity feast to express his gratitude for all they had done on his behalf during his visit to the West. This gathering of appoximately 350 people of diverse backgrounds was held in Teaneck (West Englewood) at the Bahá’í property. Each year Bahá’ís gather on the last Saturday of June to commemorate this day and have a unity picnic. Baha'i Community of Teaneck to Hold Annual Unity Picnic Saturday - Teaneck, NJ Patch |

Martyrdom of Tahirih (Dr Jakob Eduard Polak) An eyewitness reference to the Martyrdom of Tahirih by the Shah's Physician, Dr Jacob Eduard Polak, who was present at the execution. This is a very rough translation by a friend - please email improvements if you have them. Please see the end for references. Translation In late summer 1852 as the Shah, accompanied by an approximately 500-man guard, underwent an outing from his summer palace Riaveran, three men came towards him, whereupon one of them ŕ bout portant fired a pistol at him, ... The shot grazed the stomach of the Shah's horse; the guard appeared to back off, leaving him to his fate, then everyone believed him to be dead and murdered at the hands of a pretender to the throne. Had there been a decaying corpse among the living it would have seemed superfluous [very loosely translated]. Only one foreign servant noticed the Shah stirring. He lunged dauntlessly and seized one of the murderers. A fight arose in which the servant received a stab wound to the stomach; in the meantime others trudged towards the murderers - and the king was saved. What resulted were only a few small grains of shot in the area of his backside. Of the assassins one recognised fanatical Babis, who wanted to avenge the death of their Prophet. The pistol and the ammunition which they operated were so poor that only a miracle could have enabled them realise their goal. The Shah immediately showed himself the wolf, in order to prevent malicious rumours... . He retorted that God had saved him: "Certainly God has saved me, because you all have forsaken me." Then began the persecution. The Shah was encouraged to believe in a further widely networked conspiracy of Babis, shut up behind regiments, civil servants, attendants, priests, teachers, garden, in every sigh he found plotters[?] and he was not for a moment without fear for his life. Even the wife of the grand vizier, born in Masandaran, was accused belonging to the sect [...]. Seized by fear and horror from every side the Shah lapsed into Machiavellian ways to exterminate the believers. In Teheran there lived the highest of the royal farashe Haji Ali Chan, a heartless man and ready on command for any atrocity; he gave him the instruction to seek out all Babis and throw them in to jail. Then he ordered every corps, ever branch of the civilian and military detail to surrender at least one Babi in case within one or the other corps were still secret members of the sect [...].This plan should go ahead. Haji Ali an innovative mind came up with abominable, crucifying methods of execution [... passage about torture]. The martyrs demonstrated the courage and steadfastness of fanaticism; no recanting of faith, no hint of a cry of pain. I was witness to the execution of Qurret el ayn, who was executed by the war minister and his adjutants; the beautiful woman endured her slow death with superhuman strength [Ich war Zeuge von der Hinrichtung der Kurret el ayn, die vom Kriegsminister und seinen Adjutanten vollzogen wurde; die schöne Frau erduldete den langsamen Tod mit übermenschlicher Stärke.]. [ The New Zealand Star, Issue 9525, 24 April 1909, Page 2, has : "I was witness of the martyrdom of Karrattu'l Ayn, who was murdered by the Minister of War and his adjutants. Her body was thrown into a shallow well and stones thrown upon it.[34] A prominent Bábí, and subsequently Bahá'í, historian cites the wife of an officer who had the chance to know her that she was strangled by a drunken officer of the government with her own veil which she had chosen for her anticipated martyrdom.[12] One of her most notable quotes is her final utterance, "You can kill me as soon as you like, but you cannot stop the emancipation of women."[12] She was then aged about 35, and was the mother of three children.[1][3][11] Dr Jakob Eduard Polak, the Shah's physician,[52] was an eye-witness to the execution and described it as: "I was witness to the execution of Qurret el ayn, who was executed by the war minister and his adjutants; the beautiful woman endured her slow death with superhuman fortitude".[53] `Abdu'l-Bahá eulogized Táhirih writing that she was a "woman chaste and holy, a sign and token of surpassing beauty, a burning brand of the love of God".[28] The Times on the 13th of October 1852 reports the death of Táhirih, describing her as the "Fair Prophetess of Kazoeen",[54] and the "Bab's Lieutenant".[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A1...Final_Sentence Prison of Táhirih: Last edited by arthra; 08-23-2012 at 11:38 AM. |

THE letter of Mulla Husayn decided the Bab to undertake His contemplated pilgrimage to Hijaz. Entrusting His wife to His mother, and committing them both to the care and protection of His maternal uncle, He joined the company of the pilgrims of Fars who were preparing to leave Shiraz for Mecca and Medina.(1) Quddus was His only companion, and the Ethiopian servant His personal attendant. He first proceeded to Bushihr, the seat of His uncle's business, where in former days He, in close association with him, had lived the life of a humble merchant. Having there completed the preliminary arrangements for His long and arduous voyage, He embarked on a sailing vessel, which, after two months of slow, stormy, and unsteady sailing, landed Him upon the shores of that sacred land.(2) High seas and the complete absence of comfort could neither interfere with the regularity of His devotions nor perturb the peacefulness of His meditations and prayers. Oblivious of the storm that raged about Him, and undeterred by the sickness which had seized His fellow-pilgrims, He continued to occupy His time in dictating to Quddus such prayers and epistles as He felt inspired to reveal. C. Pilgrimage to Mecca. On 10 September 1844 the Báb departed for Mecca to join the annual pilgrimage. In Mecca He declared His claim publicly at the Kaaba and to the Sharif of Mecca, the custodian of the Kaaba. But the Báb was not accepted. The pilgrimage trip lasted nine and a half months, ending in mid June 1845, when the Báb reached Bushihr in southern Iran again. During this period He wrote extensively. Some of His more important works were the following: Khasá'il-i-sab'ih: A work composed by the Báb on His sea journey back to Bushihr after His pilgrimage, which listed some regulations to be followed by the Bábí community. A copy of the manuscript probably still exists in Iran. Kitáb-i-Rúh ("Book of the Spirit"): This book contains 700 or 900 verses and was revealed while the Báb was sailing back to Bushihr from pilgrimage. The original was nearly destroyed when the Báb was arrested. Several manuscript copies are extant. Sahífih baynu'l-Haramayn ("Treatise between the Two Sanctuaries"): This Arabic work was revealed while the Báb traveled from Mecca to Medina in early 1845 and is in response to questions posed to Him by a prominent Shaykhí leader. Kitáb-i-Fihrist ("The Book of the Catalogue"): A list of the Báb's works, composed by the Báb Himself after He returned from pilgrimage to Mecca, 21 June 1845. It is an invaluable bibliography of His earliest writings. Some Notes on The Báb |

The journey to Jiddah was long, tedious and exhausting. Seas were rough and storms frequent. An Arab sailing-boat did not afford much comfort. 'For days we suffered 71 from the scarcity of water. I had to content myself with the juice of sweet lemon,' the Báb writes in the Persian Bayan.(3) Haji Abu'l-Hasan recounts: During the entire period of approximately two months, from the day we embarked at Bushihr to the day when we landed at Jaddih, the port of Hijaz, whenever by day or night I chanced to meet either the Báb or Quddus, I invariably found them together, both absorbed in their work. The Báb seemed to be dictating, and Quddus was busily engaged in taking down whatever fell from His lips. Even at a time when panic seemed to have seized the passengers of that storm-tossed vessel, they would be seen pursuing their labours with unperturbed confidence and calm. Neither the violence of the elements nor the tumult of the people around them could either ruffle the serenity of their countenance or turn them from their purpose.(4) ~ H.M. The importance of the Bab going on Hajj in 1844 is sometimes overlooked... as of course more emphasis is placed on the Declaration of the Bab to Mullah Husayn in Shiraz but some more study on the subject will show how important it is in fulfillment of prophecy... Haji Mirza Habibu'llah-i-Afnan, quoting Haji Abu'l Hasan, relates in his chronicle that after the completion of the rites of the Haji, at a time when the court of the House of Ka'bah and the roofs of adjoining houses teemed with pilgrims, the Báb stood against the structure of the Ka'bah, laid hold of the ring on its door and thrice repeated, in a clear voice: [1 A sheet of cloth, unstitched.] I am that Qá'im whose advent you have been awaiting. Haji Abu'l-Hasan recalled, many years later, that a sudden hush fell upon the audience. The full implication of those momentous words must, at the time, have eluded that vast concourse of people. But the news of the claim of the young Siyyid soon spread in an ever-widening circle. ~ H.M. Balyuzi, The Bab - The Herald of the Day of Days, pp. 71-72 So this was a public declaration rather than a more private one on May 23rd 1844. It is also true that around late October ..early November 1844 there was an expectation of the return Christ by many of the Millerites in North America... October 22 passed without incident, resulting in feelings of disappointment among many Millerites. Henry Emmons, a Millerite, later wrote, I waited all Tuesday [October 22] and dear Jesus did not come;– I waited all the forenoon of Wednesday, and was well in body as I ever was, but after 12 o’clock I began to feel faint, and before dark I needed someone to help me up to my chamber, as my natural strength was leaving me very fast, and I lay prostrate for 2 days without any pain– sick with disappointment.[5] William Miller continued to wait for the second coming of Jesus Christ until his death in 1849.[citation Great Disappointment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia •His message to the Sherif of Mecca, and the account related by Haji Niyaz-i-Baghdadi 138 Wrote letter to Sherif right after completing last rites of pilgrimage, calling him to embrace the Cause. Quddús delivered letter. The Sherif failed to respond to the call. Hájí Níyáz-i-Baghdádí told Nabíl that in 1850-1851 he went on pilgrimage and met the Sherif who told him that he had met a Youth in the year '60 during pilgrimage Who presented him with a sealed book which he accepted but was too preoccupied to read. After pilgrimage he read it, was moved, and gathered from it that a Persian man was announcing the coming of the Qá'im. Hájí Níyáz told him of the Youth Who publicly asserted He could reveal verses to surpass the Qur'án in volume and beauty and that He had been martyred. The Sherif expressed indignation at their cruel treatment (as they had their illustrious ancestors) and ended the conversation. THE DAWN-BREAKERS---Chapter VII |

"Already the energetic and audacious Mulla Ali...who in the presence of one of the leading exponents of Shi'ah Islam, the far-framed Shaykh Muhammad Hasan, had audaciously asserted that from the pen of his new-found Master within the space of forty-eight hours, verses had streamed out that equaled in number those of the Qur'an, which it took its Author twenty-three years to reveal"[2] (meaning that it took The Bab 48 hours to reveal equal amount of verses as Muhammad revealed in the Qur'an in 23 years). He also to this same Shaykh presented the copy of the Bab's Qayumu'l-Asma. After this incident, Shaykh Muhammad excommunicated, chained and disgraced Mulla Ali. Mulla Ali continued to give the message of the new revelation to all the main religious leaders, religious schools, previous students of Siyyid Kazim in Iraq, authorities, general public and who ever he found capable of hearing the message of the Bab. http://bahai-library.com/rahbar_biog...la_ali-bastami Last edited by arthra; 09-29-2012 at 09:22 PM. |

How long did the Babis hold out against the Shah's forces...? A systematic campaign against the new Faith had been launched in Persia by the civil and ecclesiastical authorities combined. The believers, cut down wherever they were isolated, banded together when they could, for protection against the Government, the clergy, and the people. Betrayed and surrounded as they passed through the forest of Mazindaran, some 300 believers, mostly students and recluses, built the Fort of Shaykh Tabarsi and held out against the armies of Persia for eleven months. Cf. The Dawn-Breakers, chapters XIX and XX; God Passes By, p. 37 et seq.] (Abdu'l-Baha, Memorials of the Faithful, p. 202) So the answer is eleven months. |

Nevertheless, when the people realized that fellow supporters were not forthcoming they hesitated to accept it; while it never occurred to them that the very Qur’án whereunto unnumbered souls bear fealty today, was revealed in the midmost heart of the Arab world, yet to outward seeming for no less than seven years no one acknowledged its truth except the Commander of the Faithful [Imám ‘Alí]—may the peace of God rest upon him—who, in response to the conclusive proofs advanced by God’s supreme Testimony, recognized the Truth and did not fix his eyes on others. Thus on the Day of Resurrection God will ask everyone of his understanding and not of his following in the footsteps of others. Bahá'í Reference Library - Selections From the Writings of the Báb, Pages 89-91 And in the first book which He wrote in explanation of the Surih of Joseph,* He addressed Himself in all passages to that Person unseen from Whom He received help and grace, sought for aid in the arrangement of His preliminaries, and craved the sacrifice of life in the way of His love. (Abdu'l-Baha, A Traveller's Narrative, p. 4) A more significant light, however, is shed on this episode, marking the Declaration of the Mission of the Báb, by the perusal of that "first, greatest and mightiest" of all books in the Bábí Dispensation, the celebrated commentary on the Surih of Joseph, the first chapter of which, we are assured, proceeded, in its entirety, in the course of that night of nights from the pen of its divine Revealer. (Shoghi Effendi, God Passes By, p. 6) It was this remarkably gifted woman (Tahirih) who undertook the translation of the Báb's lengthy commentary on the Surih of Joseph (the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá') for the benefit of her Persian co-religionists, and exerted her utmost to spread the knowledge and elucidate the contents of that mighty Book. October 27, 1933 Death of Keith Ransom-Kehler, Hand of the Cause of God in Isfahan, Ira Keith Ransom-Kehler (February 14, 1876 - October 27, 1933) was an American Baha'i, Hand of the Cause of God and regarded as the first American martyr of the Faith. She carried out extensive travel teaching in the United States and Canada in the late 1920's before leaving her homeland in the 1930's to visit Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South America. She died of small pox in Isfahan, Iran in 1933 during a mission to promote Baha'i Administration and alleviate the suffering of Persian Baha'is at the hands of the Iranian government. Baha'i Calendar - Baha'i Events and Holy Days ![]() Some of the background of Keith Ransom-Kehler.. "Keith Bean attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, an outstanding tertiary educational institution for women, and received a bachelor’s degree in child psychology in 1898. In 1901, at the age of twenty-five, she married Ralph Ransom, a young painter from Saint Joseph who had attended the Art Institute of Chicago. She spent some time with him in Paris, where he studied with the influential American painter and etcher James McNeill Whistler, completing his studies at the Académie Delecluse in Paris in 1906. Meanwhile, Keith Ransom continued to pursue her own interests. Her file at Vassar College indicates that she attended Albion College in Michigan in 1903–04, earning a master’s degree in 1904, and then taught English literature there in 1904–05; she also studied at the University of Michigan (1904), the University of Arizona (1907), and the University of Chicago (1910). On 11 February 1907 she gave birth to a daughter, Julia Keith Ransom. A little over a year later, on 5 June 1908, Ralph Ransom died, apparently of tuberculosis. His mother, Mary Ransom, who lived in Saint Joseph, appears to have played a role in raising young Julia when Keith Ransom was traveling (to Europe with her father, for example, in 1908–09), studying, or working in Chicago."
