Survey finds 30 million people are slaves; with most in India, China and Pakistan

Thirty million people are slaves, half in India, survey says

Its estimate of 29.8 million slaves worldwide is higher than other attempts to quantify modern slavery. The International Labour Organisation estimates that almost 21 million people are victims of forced labour.(Reuters Photo)

LONDON: Some 30 million people are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed on Thursday.

Almost half are in India, where slavery ranges from bonded labour in quarries and kilns to commercial sex exploitation, although the scourge exists in all 162 countries surveyed by Walk Free, an Australian-based rights group...

..."Today some people are still being born into hereditary slavery, a staggering but harsh reality, particularly in parts of West Africa and South Asia," the report said...

...After India, China has the most with 2.9 million, followed by Pakistan (2.1 million), Nigeria (701,000), Ethiopia (651,000), Russia (516,000), Thailand (473,000), Democratic Republic of Congo (462,000), Myanmar (384,000) and Bangladesh (343,000).

In "The Summons of the Lord of Hosts", Baha'u'llah addresses Queen Victoria saying, "We have been informed that thou hast forbidden the trading in slaves, both men and women. This, verily, is what God hath enjoined in this wondrous Revelation. God hath, truly, destined a reward for thee, because of this"

Sad is it not.

I see there is a new Movie out regarding a person being enslaved in the USA, a true story.
Apparently he was a free man but some how was forced into slavery, not sure of the story exactly, but it is causing a lot of debate on all sides.

I think there are a small number of slaves illegally traficked in Australia too, although occasionally you meet people who are paid so little for their work you have to wonder if it is not a form of slavery.

Yes especially in the sex trade this sadly happens in Australia as it does in many countries. People in poor countries are lured with the promise of work and then enslaved, a sad happening with some people's greed for riches and power.
