Cool 1200 BC - 50 AD - American Continent

1200 BC - 50 AD - American Continent
Book: America BC
Author: Barry Fell

Barry Fell is a noted linguistic archaeologist and has documented findings that links many of the "native" American Indian cultures to language families of the Mediterranean. This is a good read. It can also hint at the tablets that may have been related to the foundlings of the Mormon Church by Joseph Smith - and the lost (12th tribe) of Israel.

The existence of linguistic traces that can be deciphered in the Americas indicates that there was some trans-atlantic sea travel in the 1200 BC to 50 AD time period. The travel appears to cease after Alexander the Great captured the latest sea port of Carthage at the mouth of the Mediterranean.

It also alludes that the Americas had little opportunity to know of Jesus until after trans-atlantic voyages resumed in the 1400s. But the religious and social traditions reflect common cultural attributes of Mediterranean influence.

The Baha'i teachings also indicate that the American Indians may have some spiritual influence in the coming world politic.

Sincerely,
Steven J. Hathaway

Well, my question about the Mormon version of the story specifically is "Where did all the writing go?" It seems very odd to me that Hebrews with the education to sail across the Atlantic could found cities and so on, yet leave NO writings whatsoever. We have plenty of surviving writings in Israel -- the dead sea scrolls, nag hammadi, inscriptions, coffins with people's name on them. Add the command in the Torah that every leader in Israel is supposed to copy the Torah letter by letter, and the idea that a population like that could leave no writing whatsoever seems really strange.

There may well have been ancient contact -- I think Atlantis is based on the Aztecs and Mayan civs personally -- but I don't think there's a lot of settling going on.

I don't think there's any substantive evidence of the Mormon belief that the lost tribes of Israel reached the New World.. No independent archeologist or scholar confirms the Mormon scenario.

Barry Fell did some research and he believed he found similarities between North Africa and the Indian cultures of the South West. He also claims there could have been some early Muslim influence but again I think this is speculative.

There are a few interesting quotes about the Amercian Indians from Baha'i sources:

Possibly Indians of America were Influenced by Prophets in Asia

"It is possible the Indians of the Americas were influenced in the remote past by Prophets in Asia. But again, as there is nothing in our teachings about it we cannot do more than speculate."

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, November 25, 1950)

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 477)

"If the light of Divine Guidance enters properly into the lives of the Indians, it will be found that they will arise with a great power and will become an example of spirituality and culture to all of the people in these countries.

"The Master has likened the Indians in your Countries to the early Arabian Nomads at the time of the appearance of Muhammad. Within a short period of time they became the outstanding examples of education, of culture and of civilization for the entire world. The Master feels that similar wonders will occur today if the Indians are properly taught and if the power of the Spirit properly enters into their living."

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to the National Spiritual Assembly of Central America and Mexico, August 22, 1957)

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 599)

'Abdu'l-Bahá Foretold for The Indians of America a Great Future if They Accepted the Teachings of Bahá'u'lláh

"The original population of the United States was very dear to 'Abdu'l-Bahá's heart, and He foretold for the Indians a great future if they accepted and became enlightened by the Teachings of Bahá'u'lláh.
"To believe in the Mouthpiece of God in His Day confers very great blessings, not only on individuals, but on races, and He hopes that you who are now numbered amongst the followers of Bahá'u'lláh will give His Message to many more of your tribe, and in this way hasten for your people a bright and happy future."

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, December 21, 1947)

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 530)
