First mention of the Faith in the US

This is probably not generally known, but I found it interesting and relevent at this time. It's noted in an obscure place to usual Baha'is. It is part of footnote 6 for Chapter Two in THE DAWNING PLACE by Bruce C. Whitmore published in 1984.

"The Faith came to the attention of the United States government as early as 1867 when a group of Baha'is from Baghdad sent a petition to the Congress through the United States consul general at Beirut. The document described the history of the Faith, the martyrdom of the Bab, the Prophet-Forerunner of the Baha'i Faith, and the persecutions inflicted upon Baha'u'llah, althought He was not mentioned by name. The closing of the petition said in part: "Consequently we are unanimously agreed to report and inform the Congress of the Republic, of the state of that wise man, that God may prepare for him relief and acquittal, and that you may help and find out a way to deliver that oppressed person from under tyranny and oppression." (petition from the Persian Reformers, 16 March 1867, Record Group 59, "General Records of the Department of State," microfilm fileT367, reel 5, National Archives, Washington, D.C.) The petition was delivered to William H. Seward, secretary of state under Andrew Johnson, (I originally typed Jackson which is incorrect). The fate of the petition remains unknown."

The paragraph in the footnote before the above one says:

"The Faith had been mentioned previously in the United States in several newspapers and magazines, the earliest known article appearing in the January 1846 issue of the Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science and Art (p.142). But these early articles were directed at describing the barbaric treatment of the Babis, forerunners of the Baha'is, rather than introducing the teachings of Baha'u'llah. (see Momen, Babi and Baha'i Religions, p.4.)"

[QUOTE=cire perdue;22395]The petition was delivered to William H. Seward, secretary of state under Andrew Jackson."

So sorry, but if that's an accurate quote, then the author committed a gross error!

Jackson died 22 years earlier!

Try Andrew Johnson.

You are absolutely correct. I even thought how could Andrew Jackson still be alive, but I typed this in, rather than copy and pasting it. I am more used to Jackson coming after Andrew than Johnson!!!!!!!
