I suggest using this list rather than the one just posted because certain Christians will claim that "only the Christian Golden Rule has a positive flavor" whereas all the others are negative "thou shalt nots." This form eliminates--and indeed refutes!--that claim: THE GOLDEN RULE Hindu Faith When a man sees that the God in himself is the same God in all that is, he hurts not himnself by hurting others: then he goes to the highest Path. Bhagavad Gita (13.28) Buddhist Faith Hurt not others with that which pains yourself. Udana-Varga (15:8) Jewish Faith What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow men. That is the entire Law; all the rest is commentary. The Talmud (Shabbat 3'a) Zoroastrian Faith Do not unto others all that which is not well for oneself. _Shayast-na-Shayast_ Christian Faith All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. The Gospel of Matthew (7:12) Muslim Faith No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself. Hadith of Bukhari (quoted in "Prophet Muhammad and His Mission_, p. 106) Babi Faith Become a source of comfort to one another. Writings of the Bab, p. 129 Baha'i Faith And if thine eyes be turned towards justice, choose thou for thy neighbor that which thou choosest for thyself. Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 30 |

Thank you, I think that both of the lists of golden rules are good, yours and the one that the Catholic organization made a poster of.

A wonderful poster! I have heard of "Scarboro Missions" before, but only in passing through another website. I have checked up and they seem like a wonderful Catholic organisation! They are very committed to Interfaith dialogue, as is the Catholic Church in general. This poster is actually now on display at the UN headquarters in New York and a documentary has been made about Scarboro Missions Interfaith dialogue. They write on their webpage: http://www.scarboromissions.ca/Inter...what_we_do.php What We Do Support interfaith dialogue with "The Golden Rule" poster, which shows the golden rule in the sacred writings of 13 faiths. As more and more people hear about our work, individuals and groups are consulting us on interfaith issues. People in Toronto and across Canada are being inspired to take interfaith action as a result of hearing about our work. Overseas Interfaith Work Our interfaith work here in Canada is also a support and inspiration to interfaith activity in Scarboro Missions' overseas missions. In Canada, we are likewise inspired and supported by Scarboro members working overseas in pluralist environments. A Global Vision We are in touch with local, national and international interfaith activity and networks. And with Catholic interfaith activity around the globe Lay Mission Program An interfaith component is now part of our lay training program. Interfaith exposure prepares students for the cross-cultural reality of overseas work. Events The Interfaith Office has created and sponsors numerous events. Golden Rule Poster Scarboro Missions has developed a poster featuring the Golden Rule in the sacred writings of 13 religious traditions. Each scripture is accompanied by the symbol of the featured religion. Accompanying lesson plans for elementary and high school curricula are being developed and will be commercially published. A study guide for adult audiences is also in the works. A documentary about the poster has been aired on a national TV broadcast, and the poster is now on permanent display at the United Nations in New York. What We Have Accomplished!! Racial Harmony Award In 1999, the Scarborough Community & Race Relations Committee granted its Racial Harmony Award to our interfaith committee. Since then, members of the committee have received other awards for their interfaith efforts. Greetings from John Paul and Others The 1998 special edition of Scarboro magazine, "Catholics and the Interfaith Conversation," has received letters of praise from John Paul II, Cardinal Arinze of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Father Kolvenbach, the international head of the Jesuit order, Cardinal Edward Cassidy in Rome, who has the chief responsiblility for both interchurch work, and the Vatican's relations with the Jews. Hindu Teacher Honours Scarboro Missions In 2000, Swami Veda Bharati, an internationally renowned Hindu teacher from India, honoured Scarboro Missions for our interfaith initiatives. The Swami presented a gold etching of Jesus to Scarboro Missions during a multi-faith prayer service at a Hindu temple in Toronto. I like these guys - Catholics after my own heart |

Here is the synopsis for the documentary that was aired on Canadian TV: "A Canadian Roman Catholic Mission Society" Synopsis Through self-directed explorations in art, music, rap and drama skits, teenage youth explore ways of embodying the core values of "The Golden Rule" (ethic of reciprocity) as expressed in 13 of the world's great religions. Do unto others as you would have them do to you... propels the viewer on a global journey of discovery, giving life to what many consider to be the most universal moral teaching throughout history. The Golden Rule can be found in many religions, ethical systems, indigenous cultures and secular philosophies. A poster version of The Golden Rule (developed at Scarboro Missions) hangs in the Vatican and the United Nations and is currently a world best seller. They've had some impact on the world! To get this "Golden Rule" poster hung up in both the Vatican and the UN is a real achievement. Well done Scarboro! |
