We might be small in number, but it is possible to separate the feast of Christ's birth from the the tradition of giving gifts. Several families in our town do this--gifts on the feast of St. Nicholas, and keep Christmas to celebrating the birth of our Savior--it's a Dutch and German tradition which we have incorporated into our family since the early days of our marriage. Our children do not struggle with the Santa Claus issue, and it's a good lesson early on that helps them cope with being different from others. I also know many Christian families who do not give gifts to each other, but will send money to the missions or to local food banks. The materialism and secularism of society has grabbed Christmas, but some of us are taking it back, at least in our family settings and among our friends. I am a Catholic Christian, and have personal reasons for needing to understand the Baha'i faith. Thank you for allowing me to enter into your forums to learn.

Thanks for your post Zita and welcome to the Forum... I have to admit it has been those after-Chrismas sales that have helped us for Ayyam-i-Ha..at least in my family. |
