Dear friends, According to a recent ABC News report, Alcohol has been linked to 20 percent of all breast cancers. 1 The report continues, "The Cancer Council says alcohol is a much bigger contributor to cancer than previously thought, adding that the latest evidence suggests drinking is the cause of 5 per cent of all cancer cases in Australia. The figure rises to more than 20 per cent for breast cancer cases." 2 The article makes for an interesting read. Kind regards. 1,2 Alcohol linked to 20pc of breast cancer cases - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) |

I believe alcohol is also implicated as a factor in pancreatic cancer and mouth and throat cancers, possibly others. I don't think this is the prime reason why Bahá'ís are not allowed to drink it. I think that is because of the effect of intoxication on our judgement. I have often thought that we do benefit from added protections if be obey this law. I believe this is a law that is good for society as a whole. There are a lot of individuals who sucessfully moderate their drinking in society and seem to suffer no ill effects. But, when a group of individuals do this, it produces a climate where some are socially pressured to drink alcohol and are not able to moderate. Moderate drinkers will often talk as if this is the weakness of the individual and they should get a grip but I think this view does not take in the bigger picture. Personally, I never started drinking alchol so I don't know if I would have been a moderate drinker or not. |

NOT to mention alcoholism. My parents were alcoholics, uncles were alcoholics, and it affects families over more than one generation. I have no idea why most of my generation was skipped from being addicts in my family. However we are the walking wounded.

i briefly remember a story of a Jewish man who brought a bottle of wine as a gift to Bahaullah. Bahaullah toled him that he appreciated the offer, however, he would be more happy if the Jewish guy would drink the wine himself and enjoyed it. |
