European Union passes resolution calling on Iran to lift bans on Baha'is:

Freedom of religion

I. whereas, apart from Islam, only Zoroastrianism, Christianity and Judaism are recognised as religions by law, while those who practise unrecognised religions, such as Baha'is and Sufis, are discriminated against and violently repressed; whereas notably the Baha'is cannot exercise their religion and are moreover consequently deprived of all civil rights, such as their rights to property and access to higher education,

Freedom of religion

13. Calls on the Iranian authorities to eliminate all forms of discrimination based on religious grounds; notably calls for the de facto ban on practising the Baha'i faith to be lifted;...

thanks for the post.

doesn't the UN have some resolutions banning the mistreatment of Baha'is?

do you know if this ban will hold any more weight than the previous ones?

i'm thinking that because its the EU, they may hold a lot more weight because they are a big economic power.

Well the US Congress, The UN General Assembly and the European Union have passed resolutions about the situation of the Baha'is in Iran....so hopefully it really does have an effect as they know how they treat the Baha'is becomes known through out the planet and is being watched....

If you have not seen it a very good site for information can be found at

I dunno, I'd have more confidence in Resolutions if it seemed that Amadinejad cared what the rest of the world thinks. It's a good start, and hopefully the next leaders will allow Bahais in Iran more freedom, but I just don't see it coming from Resolutions.

I think resolutions though are important and being counted as opposed to injustice is also important..

An oppressor dislikes having their deeds broadcast widely and critiqued..

yeah better to light a candle than curse the darkness, but I still question the effectiveness of simply saying "leave the bahai alone". I think doing more to isolate Iran might be more useful. I don't know if anything can help at this point, but hopefully soon there will be a change in Iran.

The problem is though we cannot as Baha'is advocate something political that would "isolate" Iran.. that could make the situation for the Baha'is there worse than it already is!

Better for now to educate and share the latest information in hopes that the international community will focus on it.

Somedays I'm just too 'mericanized for my own good. Round the US if something doesn't immediately go our way, you influence it with as big of a "hammer" as you can find. Which really if you think on it -- you're right it does make things worse.

Who knows but Allah.
